Man died after being attacked by escaped cow in Carmarthenshire –

A man died after he was attacked by a cow that had escaped from a nearby market, an inquest has heard.

Huw Evans, 75, suffered serious injuries in Whitland, Carmarthenshire, on 19 November last year.

Mr Evans had been crossing the road in the town centre when he was confronted by an "extremely agitated" cow.

He was airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where he died six days later.

The cow, a brown Limousin breed, escaped from Whitland Mart while being unloaded from a trailer.

An inquest into his death took place at Llanelli Town Hall on Wednesday.

It was told that the cow ran down the main road to the centre of Whitland, a short distance away, after it escaped from the market.

There it attacked Mr Evans, despite attempts by people to contain it.

The animal made its way onto a nearby rail track and trains had to be stopped, before it was then put down in a field.

In a tribute released after his death, Mr Evans's family described him as a "loved" father, grandfather, brother and uncle and a "friend to many".

"We would like to thank the community for their support and well wishes while Huw was in hospital and since his passing, we now know how much he will be missed," they added.
