Huge 22 mile A3 diversion explained as Hindhead Tunnel closes …

Those heading southbound on the A3 might be diverted 22 miles after a section of road shut at the Hindhead Tunnel.[1] Drivers will be sent towards Farnham[2] on the A31 instead.

The closure was announced in the early hours of Thursday morning (November 23) when a technical issue was discovered at the traffic[3] lights moving southbound. National Highways decided to shut the southbound side and is keeping the northbound side open.

During Wednesday night the northbound section of the tunnel closed[4] for maintenance works and did not open till 6am Thursday morning, which means for a few hours the tunnel was completely shut.

Diverers advised to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol on local road signs. A diversion has been set out by National Highways, which will take drivers 26 miles off track in total. Those heading south will leave the A3 at the Stag Hill Interchange in Guildford[6] and will head along the Hogs Back to Farnham where they will join the A31. Drivers will continue on for seven miles, where they will continue onto the Farnham Bypass.

Following this, they will need to continue on to the B3001 junction and join the A325 to the Longmoor Interchange. From there drivers will be able to rejoin the A3 on the Longmoor slip road.

Diversion in full:

  • From the A3 Southbound, leave at the Stag Hill interchange (Hogs Back) and join the A31 towards Farnham.
  • Continue for approximately 7 miles, to the Shepherd and Flock roundabout.
  • Use the 1st exit and continue on the A31 Farnham Bypass. Continue to the B3001 junction.
  • Cross over this junction to RBT A31/ A325. Take the 1st exit A325 and follow it along its entire length to the Longmoor Interchange.
  • Cross over the RBT joining the A3 Southbound Longmoor on slip.

National Highways advises drivers to allow extra time for their journey, or to take alternative travel. It is not known when the issue at the tunnel could be resolved, but follow along the SurreyLive blog[7] for updates.
