Edinburgh commuters are facing delays as a major route[1] on the outskirts of the capital is closed following a collision as multiple children were taken to hospital.

Motorists travelling on the M90 northbound near Kirkliston are being forced to pass the smash on the hard shoulder with both lanes currently closed and police[2] at the scene.

Traffic Scotland has warned commuters of lengthy delays following the collision which took place at around 3.35pm on Wednesday, November 8. A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed three vehicles were involved and "children" were transported to hospital as a precaution, although is is unclear how many.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, they wrote: "NEW. 15:35. #M90 (N) experiencing delays of approx. 30 minutes due to a collision. Lanes 1 and 2 are CLOSED. Traffic can pass on the hard shoulder only."

At around 4.20pm, they updated travellers and said delays had eased off to around 10 minutes. It is currently unclear how many vehicles are involved or if there are any reported injuries.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 3pm on Wednesday, 8 November, 2023, we were called to a report of a three-car crash on the M90 near Junction 1A.

"Emergency services attended and children were taken to the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People as a precaution.

“Recovery was arranged for all vehicles.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances."
