A63 closed near Brough as lorry strikes bridge – live updates

The A63 has been closed in both directions, reportedly after a lorry struck a bridge.

Motorists described seeing "cables hanging from the bridge" and a cloud of concrete dust this morning, as traffic started to slow down. The road has since been closed in both directions between Brough and South Cave, with emergency services on the scene.

Emergency repair work is set to take place and motorists have been warned the closure could last a long time. Members of the public have been asked to plan their journeys accordingly and avoid the area.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: "The A63 is closed both ways between the A15 ( Hessle ) and A1034 (South Cave ) due to a lorry that has struck a bridge. Emergency services are on scene and Traffic Officers are on route. The closure is expected to be protracted, so allow extra travel time if in the area."

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: "The A63 is currently closed both east and west bound between Brough and South Cave as well as Dale Road/Elloughton. Road users are expect to experience delays throughout the day whilst emergency repair work is carried out to a bridge following a collision involving a lorry. Members of the public are asked to avoid the area and plan alternative travel routes."

Further updates will follow.
