A12 shut as person rushed to hospital after ‘medical emergency’

A person has been rushed to hospital following a medical incident which caused traffic chaos on the A12 today. The major road was shut in both directions for some time this morning (November 9) during the incident.

The "medical emergency" took place between junctions 16 and 17 of the A12 between Galleywood and Howe Green. Both carriageways were closed off by police during the incident, with ambulance crews also attending the scene.

There was traffic building back to the Boreham Interchange from around 9am this morning until the carriageways were reopened shortly before 11am. At one point there were more than seven miles of queues on the southbound carriageway.

The East of England Ambulance Service has confirmed it attended the scene and took one patient to hospital for further treatement. A spokesman said: "One ambulance, one rapid response vehicle, one ambulance officer vehicle and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were called to a lay-by on the A12 this morning following reports of a medical emergency.

"One patient was transported in a serious condition to Queen's Hospital Romford by road ambulance." Essex Police also attended the scene to assist the ambulance service.

A spokesman said: "We received a call from our ambulance service colleagues requesting assistance at the scene of an incident on the A12 at Chelmsford. A road closure was in place in the area while they dealt with a medical emergency.”
