Sheffield road closures and flooding chaos as drivers trapped in …

Storm Babet is wreaking havoc across Sheffield and South Yorkshire as heavy rain and wind continues to batter the city.

Roads, train and bus services have been hugely disrupted across the city, with many roads flooded. Cars have got stuck in the water, roads have been blocked off and public transport has been cancelled. Train stations are also underwater and rivers have burst their banks, prompting a 'danger to life' weather warning from the Met Office.

There are 20 flood warnings currently in place across Yorkshire and 47 flood alerts[1] have also been issued as around 50mm of rain is expected to fall across northern parts of England today. Sheffield is the worst affected so far and it is expected to be heavy rain for the rest of the evening.

As water levels have risen, concerns have turned to the Meadowhall Shopping centre as nearby roads and pathways have flooded and shut, prompting the centre to deploy its flood defences. Meadowhall Drive, as well as pathways along the riverside, are also closed. The upper pink car park is also temporarily closed while excess water is cleared.

Below is a list of all the road closures currently in place in Sheffield today due to flooding.

  • Weedon Street close to Meadowhall

  • Upwell Street

  • Penny Lane

  • Fife Street

  • Beaver Hill Road

  • Mosborough Parkway into the city

  • There are delays to traffic on the M1 in Carbrook and Meadowhall, as the heavy rain is causing congestion

  • A57 Northbound closed, heavy traffic due to traffic problem from B6064 Coisley Hill (Coisley Hill roundabout, Woodhouse, Sheffield) to A630 Sheffield Parkway (Manor, Sheffield).On-going since around 13:50.

  • One lane closed due to roadworks on M1 Southbound from J33 A630 (Catcliffe / Sheffield / Rotherham) to J32 M18 (M18 interchange)

Below is other travel disruption including trains and buses across Sheffield.

  • Line closed Chesterfield-Sheffield in both directions due to flooding

  • No service on CrossCountry between Derby and Sheffield due to flooding

  • A 'do not travel' warning has also been issued for the Northern rail Sheffield to Lincoln line due to heavy flooding. Services on this line were delayed up to 30 minutes this morning, but now Northern are warning travellers not to use this line

  • Replacement buses will operate between Rotherham and Meadowhall from 9.30am

  • Travel South Yorkshire has also reported that Rotherham Railway Station is now closed due to flooding

  • Bus operator First South Yorkshire has tweeted that the following roads in Sheffield are flooded and are affecting the following bus routes: No. 76 - Due to flooding at Abbey Lane/Bocking Lane, services are diverted via Meadowhead roundabout, Greenhill Avenue and Bocking Lane in both directions. No. 52A - Beaverhill Road is blocked due to flooding. Services will divert via Retford Road & Furnace Lane in both directions. No. 18 - Due to flooding at Upwell Street buses will be using Jenking and Hollywell street in both directions. X5 - Retford Road is currently blocked. Service towards Dinnington diverted via Beighton Road & Chesterfield Road. Service toward Sheffield diverted via Swallownest Crossroads Chesterfield Road, A57 & Beighton Road

  • Services at a stand on CrossCountry Southbound between Sheffield and Derby due to fallen tree on the line

  • SheffieldOnline has reported a car stuck on Jordanthorpe Parkway, as the road is submerged by water

  • No service on CrossCountry between Derby and Sheffield due to flooding
