Major road on edge of Shrewsbury reopens after cement mixer rolls …

The West Mercia Operations and Communications social media account announced the closure of the A53 at the Battlefield Roundabout in Shrewsbury shortly after 9.30am, with fire and ambulance crews also in attendance.

A social media post from the force said: "Road Closed! Shrewsbury A53 @ Battlefield Island due to highway incident. Emergency services in attendance."

A spokesperson later confirmed: "Police were called to reports of a lorry that had overturned on the A53 between Shawbury Road End to Shawbury Park Junction just after 9.05am this morning (Tuesday 24 October). No injuries were recorded. The road will remain closed to allow time to clean up the scene."

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said that it had sent three crews to the scene, as well as a rescue tender and a support pump.

Three fire appliances including a rescue tender were sent from Shrewsbury and Wem after receiving a call at 9.07am.

The service said: "RTC involving one HGV cement mixer, no persons trapped, crews handed over to police."

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of an overturned lorry near to the junction of the A49 and Robert Jones Way, Battlefield, at 9.07am.

"One ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene.

"On arrival we discovered one patient, a man, who was the driver of the lorry.

"He had managed to get himself out of the vehicle and was treated for minor injuries before being discharged at the scene."

Fire crews were stood down at 9.31am, and the road was announced as open again at 3pm.
