Major emergency response on quiet Stoke-on-Trent street

A major emergency response was sent to a quiet residential street in Stoke this afternoon. Several emergency service vehicles including police and fire engines as well as two air ambulances descended on a residential estate in the Birches Head area at around 1pm.

The major response was sent to an incident at a property in Athena Road, with reports locally that it involved a shed fire. But residents say seeing firefighters using their hoses, there was no sign of fire.

One resident, Nick Dobson, told StokeonTrentLive: "I was in the garden and I heard loads and loads of fire engines and emergency vehicles going past and thought that's strange because it's usually a really quiet estate here. Then I saw two helicopters hovering over - it looked like quite a serious incident.

"People were saying it was a fire but we couldn't see any fire or see or smell any smoke. They were running around with their hoses so there must have been a fire but there was no sign of one."

It is understood that at least one air ambulance landed on the field at the back of Athena Road and took off around 30 minutes later. It is not yet confirmed whether the air ambulance was carrying a patient.

All fire service and ambulance vehicles are now believed to have left the scene, but it is understood that police remain at the scene.

Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted for a statement on the incident.
