Emergency services were called[2] to the A28 Great Chart Bypass between the Matalan and Tithe Barn Lane roundabouts at around 11am, with Mr Humphrey dying at the scene.

An inquest held at County Hall, Maidstone, into Mr Humphrey’s death[3], heard that he had been travelling on the road in his white Mercedes van in the lead-up to the crash.

Mr Humphrey, from Essex, had been heading towards Tenterden when he had neared a left-hand corner on the single-carriage A-road.

However, while attempting to negotiate the corner, his vehicle travelled onto the opposite lane, where it collided with an oncoming DAF lorry. Mr Humphrey’s cause of death was given as multiple injuries.

Assistant coroner Sarah Clarke told the court that the weather in the area had been dry, with good visibility.

The two vehicles were both severely damaged in the collision, and the lorry driver was taken to the William Harvey Hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

The road remained closed for almost nine hours to allow collision investigation work to take place, with the affected stretch finally reopening at 8.42pm.

Kent Police's serious collision investigation unit is carrying out inquiries and urge anyone who saw the incident, or who has relevant dashcam footage, to get in touch.
