Historic Cambs pub garden plans recommended for approval …

Plans for a new outdoor drinking area at a popular Wisbech pub have been recommended for approval. The Duke's Head, on Church Terrace, put forward an application to the council in February 2023.

The proposals intend to use land next to the venue to build a pub garden, along with a gate, timber canopy and planters. It is hoped that this will be used all year round, with a roof also going over parts of the area during bad weather[1].

The pub building dates back to the 17th century and is Grade II listed. The applicants say that the planned works will have no impact on the heritage of the site.

Several objections were lodged by people living in the area, who expressed concern over the fence affecting the setting of the nearby St. Peter and St. Paul Church. They were also worried the structure would impinge on the natural light and side view of the windows.

In response, the pub said the fence's location was for security reasons and would help provide visibility and promotion of the garden. They also said the doorway connecting the pub to the garden would give customers easier access and would not damage important architectural features.

A decision on the application will be made by Fenland District Council at a planning meeting on Thursday (October 19). The plans can be viewed in full, using the reference F/YR23/0237/F or clicking here[2].
