Clifton bike incident: No arrests after have-a-go heroes drive violent …

No arrests have so far been made after a group of Bristol residents drove away a masked gang who were attempting to steal a motorbike[1]. A number of residents were threatened with a hammer during the violent altercation which happened in broad daylight and can be seen in the video at the top of this article.

It shows a gang of masked men repeatedly hitting a motorcycle lock with a hammer before being confronted by a number of angry locals. Avon and Somerset Police[2] have said that they have seen the footage and are investigating the attempted theft which was reported to have happened at around 3.45pm on the afternoon of Monday, October 23.

One member of the armed gang can be seen trying to snatch a mobile phone from the hand of a male onlooker as a woman tells the gang to "f*** off". Having failed miserably to break the motorcycle lock[3], the three would-be thieves make off on a motorbike without a rear licence plate as a member of the public chases them with a fire extinguisher which he hurls at them as they flee.

It is a woman who initially confronts the armed men, standing over one of them as he tries to smash the bike lock with a heavy hammer. The incident lasted just a few minutes.

Avon and Somerset Police have issued a statement following the altercation. It reads: "We're aware of footage circulating of an attempted theft of a motorbike in Berkeley Square, Clifton[6], Bristol.

"This is part of a live investigation. It happened at about 3.45pm on Monday 23 October and was reported at the time.

"Enquiries are ongoing - if you have any information which could help please call 101 and give the reference 5223259123 or report online. We're looking into the circumstances and will issue a full update and appeal as soon as we can."
