Chaos as major Edinburgh train lines closes and river ‘bursts its banks’

Edinburgh train passengers are facing further disruption after a weekend of downpours[1].

Following a yellow weather warning across Scotland, with some areas issued an amber warning, severe flooding caused a large number of train services[2] to be cancelled across the country.

While Network Rail Scotland are working to get the lines up and running, major Edinburgh routes are still affected.

On Sunday, ScotRail warned passengers heading to and from the city that the Edinburgh to Glenrothes line has been closed for the whole day due to the extreme weather.

Trains from Edinburgh to Aberdeen have also been cancelled. ScotRail states on its website: "Train services running across the whole ScotRail network will be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected to last until around 2:00pm today (October 8)."

Meanwhile, the Edinburgh-Inverness line has also been closed as the River Spey burst its banks this morning. This comes as an amber weather warning is in place for Dundee up to Inverness.

Train passengers are being urged to check their journeys and plan ahead as disruptions are set to continue through the day.

ScotRail service delivery director David Simpson said: “The weather we have seen over the weekend has been extreme and in some parts of the country we are continuing to see dangerous levels of rainfall and flooding. We appreciate that weather related disruption like this can be frustrating, but our first priority has to be the safety of the public and our colleagues.

“Our staff across the country, alongside colleagues at Network Rail, are working hard to get services back to normal as quickly and safely as possible, with the priority being getting things back to normal for Monday morning.

“Customers are advised that they should check their journey before travelling, and keep an eye on our website, app, or social media feeds for live updates.”
