BMW driver in Royal Stoke after smash that shut A53

An elderly BMW driver has been injured in a crash that shut a major road linking Stoke-on-Trent to the Staffordshire Moorlands. The A53 was closed this morning after a BMW and a truck collided in Stockton Brook[1], with queues stretching almost as far back as Baddeley Green.

Witnesses reported the BMW had sustained heavy front-end damage in the crash, which happened at the junction of Bunts Lane and Nursery Avenue. And now ambulance chiefs have confirmed the driver was injured and taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 10.09am to a road traffic collision involving a car and a truck on Leek New Road in Stockton Brook, Stoke-on-Trent. One ambulance attended the scene. Upon arrival we found an elderly man who was the driver of the first car.

"He was assessed and had sustained injuries not believed to be life threatening. He received treatment at the scene and was conveyed to Royal Stoke University Hospital for further treatment. The driver of the truck did not require treatment."
