‘Absolute madness’ as driver clocked doing 107mph on M5

A black BMW driver hit speeds of over 100mph on the M5 in Somerset. They were one of more than 100 speeding motorists caught by police on the motorway in the space of an hour yesterday (October 16).

Officers from Avon and Somerset Police's[1] Road Policing and Road Safety Teams carried out checks at two locations on the M5 in Somerset[2]. They detected 112 drivers breaking the speed limit, including one who was clocked at 107mph near Bridgwater[3].

ASPolice Roads Policing (RPU) said in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter): "Further #OpTempo checks this time on the M5 in #Somerset. In just over 1 hr across 2 separate locations we detected 112 drivers whose speed will result in Notice of Intended Prosecution.

"This driver was clocked at 107mph on a busy stretch near Bridgwater. #RoadsPolicing #Fatal5."

Andy Nickolls of the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Road Safety Team has described the offences as "absolute madness". He said it is "impossible to stop within a safe distance" while driving at such speeds.

He replied to the police post on X: "At this speed, it's absolute madness. Impossible to stop within a safe distance and serious injury to both driver, passengers, and other road users if they have a collision! #fatal5."
