Two British holidaymakers have died in northern Spain after coming off the motorbike they were travelling on.

The dead pair, a man and a woman aged 68 and 65 and described as a couple, were heading through the municipality of Blanes in the province of Asturias when they suffered their fatal accident.

The tragedy occurred yesterday around 5.30pm on the A-8 motorway during heavy rain in the area. The woman is said to have been hit by another vehicle while she was lying on the tarmac and had to be cut free from the underneath of the car by firefighters.

The man is also understood to have been hit by another vehicle described locally as a lorry after he came off the motorbike. They were pronounced dead at the scene. The Civil Guard is carrying out an ongoing investigation.

A spokesman for the force confirmed today: “Two British nationals have died in an accident on the A8 motorway in the municipality of Blanes, near the Balmori exit. They were a couple aged 68 and 65. They were heading west in the direction of the provincial capital Oviedo when the motorbike they were on overturned for reasons which are still being investigated."

Well-placed sources said there was no indication they lived in Spain and they were believed to be holidaymakers. The accident led to the temporary closure of part of the motorway. It was not immediately clear where the two Brits had been heading when they suffered their tragic accident.

Llanes is popular with tourists and is well-known for its rugged coastline. It is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful towns in Spain. Many locals emigrated to the Americas to make their fortunes and some returned rich and built large houses known collectively as the ‘Indianas.”
