Travellers ordered to leave by council after setting up camp …

Travellers have been asked to leave by the council after setting up camp on land underneath the A19[1] flyover.

Caravans and cars were spotted by motorists last week and remain at the site on Monday. Around a dozen vehicles are parked up off the A1032 under the carriageway linking Stockton[2] and Middlesbrough[3].

Pictures taken on Monday morning show families have set up seating at the site near Newport Bridge. A number of cars and caravans can also be seen alongside a Cleveland Police[4] vehicle.

Stockton Council[6] has confirmed they have served the travellers with a direction to leave, a spokesperson said: “As well as monitoring the group we have been carrying out site visits and have served the travellers with a direction to leave. We are working closely with Cleveland Police to patrol the area and ensure the group moves on.”

It is not the first time travellers have been spotted at the site. In May 2020, Teesside Live reported a collection of around five caravans, alongside a number of cars and a pickup truck, parked at the site.
