Officer ‘attacked’ after police swarm street due to concerns about man

A number of police officers swooped on a Sutton Coldfield[1] street closing off to the public after reports of concern for a man at an address led to an officer being 'attacked'. Some 10 police cars are said to have attended Reddicap Heath Road after the alarm was raised for the welfare of a man at a home.

The road was blocked off by the Anvil pub and further up the street, with Newdigate Road on Falcon Lodge also said to have been closed to through traffic. Armed police were also said to have attended.

And West Midlands Police[2] has confirmed that it initially attended after concerns were raised about a man. He was spoken to and left the property safely. But the incident turned ugly with a police officer then 'attacked' with the perpetrator then arrested.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “We were called to Reddicap Heath Road in Sutton Coldfield shortly before 8pm yesterday (25 September) following concerns about the welfare of a man.

“We used specialist negotiators to talk to the man and persuade him to leave the property. While at the address an officer was assaulted where he suffered bruising to his face and body.

“A 49-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault with intent to cause serious harm. He remains in custody.” West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was alerted to the incident but were stood down before attending.
