Motorist injured on M5 after car flips during crash

A person was rushed to hospital after a car overturned on the M5 this afternoon (September 12). Emergency services were called to the crash in Somerset at 1.42pm.

The car overturned on the southbound carriageway between junction 19 for Portishead and junction 20 for Clevedon. All traffic was initially held but, at the time of writing (2.40pm), only one lane remains closed as the vehicle is recovered.

There were delays of up to 40 minutes following the closure of the motorway. Some residual delays remain as the vehicle involved is recovered by National Highways officers.

Avon and Somerset Police[2] has confirmed that one person was taken to hospital with minor injuries following the crash. Officers are no longer at the scene.

National Highways said in a tweet at 1.59pm: "Traffic has been stopped on the M5 southbound in Somerset between J19 (Portishead) and J20 (Clevedon) due to an overturned car. Emergency services are in attendance. There's already a 30 minute delay on approach."

It added at 2.31pm: "UPDATE - Lanes one and two are now open on the M5 southbound in Somerset between J19 (Portishead) and J20 (Clevedon). Lane three remains closed for recovery of vehicle involved in a collision. There are currently delays of 30 minutes on approach."
