More delays for drivers as work on ‘collapsed’ Northwich road enters …

Motorists face more delays as works to repair a 'collapsed' Northwich[1] road has gone into a second week. And while the stretch of Shurlach Road in Lostock Gralam is expected to go on until at least the end of the week no date has been offered when it will fully reopen.

It comes as Cheshire West and Chester Council[2] say 'further excavations and investigations' are continuing on the westbound carriageway. The authority has told motorists it is 'working hard to reopen the road as soon as possible'.

CheshireLive previously reported[3] how police had been called out to the scene on Monday, September 4, and closed the route off. Since then the local authority said the collapse had been caused by a 'drainage collapse'.

Drone footage shared with CheshireLive shows the extent of the works with the hole caged off.

A spokesperson for the council said: "Due to the health and safety requirements for the depth of the excavations and the complexity of the works, it is expected that the road will need to remain closed until at least to the end of this week.

The council is aware that these works are causing significant disruption to the surrounding roads in Northwich but we are working hard to re-open the road as soon as possible. Thanks you for your patience and support while these emergency works take place."

Last week a diversion route came into force using A559 Manchester Road, A533 Kingsmead and A556 Shurlach Road. But motorists in Northwich are braced for delays.

The closure comes as works by gas supplier Cadent are being carried out on the A556 near to the King Street roundabout.
