Man rushed to hospital after lorry hits central reservation on motorway

A man has been rushed to hospital after being rescued from a lorry following a crash on the M61[1]. Emergency services were called out to the motorway near Bolton[2] following a collision on the northbound carriageway between junctions five and six.

It followed a lorry hitting the central reservation of the motorway at around 9.45am today (September 6). Firefighters released a man from the lorry before handing him to the care of paramedics.

North West Ambulance Service confirmed it attended and took a man in his 50s to hospital. The outside lane of the M61 remains closed in each direction this afternoon while emergency barrier repairs take place.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “Around 9.45am on Wednesday, September 6 2023, two fire engines from Bolton Central and Horwich and a Technical Response Unit from Leigh attended a road traffic collision on the M61 northbound between junctions five and six. The collision involved one heavy goods vehicle.

"One man was extricated from the vehicle before being handed over to the North West Ambulance Service. Fire service were in attendance for approximately 50 minutes.”
