A66 set to close for ‘vital maintenance’ as motorists urged to plan …

A major Middlesbrough route will be closed this weekend to allow for essential repair and maintenance work.

The A66[1] will close its eastbound route at the overbridge at Newport interchange on Friday evening as works to waterproof and renew the bridge joints get underway. Traffic management will be in place during the closure, with diversions off the slip road at Newport roundabout and re-joining the A66 at the on-slip from the roundabout.

This closure comes as thousands are set to flock to the town centre as the Middlesbrough[2] Mela kicks off its re-scheduled dates in Albert Park[3] on Saturday and Sunday. Motorists have been advised by Middlesbrough Council to plan their journeys ahead of time to account for any potential delays caused by the works.

The A66 will shut eastbound at the overbridge at Newport interchange from 9pm on Friday evening, until late on Sunday.

To reduce the amount of traffic on the A66 during the works, the A19[5] eastbound slip roads to the A66 will also be closed. Traffic from the A19 northbound will divert via Portrack Interchange, while those travelling from the A19 southbound will use Mandale Interchange.

The same eastbound section of the A66 will close overnight, from 9pm to 6am, on September 11 and 12, with overnight resurfacing of the A66 eastbound between the A19 and Newport Interchange also taking place from September 13 to 16.

Further overnight closures will be in place from September 18 to 20 on the A66 westbound carriageway between the Newport interchange and the A19, again for resurfacing.

A Middlesbrough Council[6] spokesman said: “These works are vital to ensure the maintenance of one of Middlesbrough’s busiest roads. We apologise for any disruption the works may cause and advise drivers to plan ahead, expect short delays and take a different route if possible.”
