Ten assessed and one in hospital after people fall ill at bank branch

Ten people were assessed and one remains in hospital after a number of people fell ill at a bank in a town centre. 999 crews rushed to the Warwickshire town[1] of Nuneaton this afternoon, Tuesday, August 29, after numerous people reported feeling unwell at a premises on Newdegate Street.

There was a cordon in place for much of this afternoon near the Santander bank, on the corner of Newdegate Street and Bridge Street. Ambulances, fire engines and police cars were at the scene for most of today, although Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service has now left.

Santander confirmed to our sister title CoventryLive it had closed over a "potential safety issue", and it was unclear when it would re-open. West Midlands Ambulance confirmed a total of ten patients were assessed following the incident, with one in hospital tonight.

A West Midlands Ambulance[3] spokesperson said: "One man has been taken to hospital and nine other patients have been assessed and discharged at the scene following an incident in Nuneaton this afternoon.

"West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to reports of numerous people feeling unwell on Newdegate Street at 12.26pm and sent three ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Trust’s Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene.

“Crews arrived to find ten patients complaining of feeling unwell. One of them, a man, was assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to George Eliot Hospital in a stable condition.

A Santander spokesperson said: "During routine works at our Nuneaton branch earlier today a potential safety issue was detected and as a precaution the branch was closed. We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes our customers.

"The local post office in Nuneaton is just 100 yards from the Santander branch where customers can do everyday banking activities including cash deposits, while the nearest Santander branch is in Coventry."
