Motorcyclist who died after crash with car in Gwynedd is named

A motorcyclist who died after a crash in Gwynedd has been named. Mark Anthony Joyce, 56, of Middlewich in Cheshire, died at the scene of the collision on the A494 in Rhydymain near Dolgellau[1] on Sunday, August 13.

Sarah Riley, assistant coroner for north west Wales, today opened an inquest in Caernarfon[2] into the death of the maintenance worker. She said she had been told that Mr Joyce had been riding his Suzuki GSXR motorbike.

She said: "The motorcycle veered onto the wrong side of the road into the path of an oncoming Ford Focus. The motorcycle collided with the front of the Ford Focus.

"Mr Joyce sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision." He was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic at 1pm that day and was formally identified by a friend to a police officer.

Ms Riley said at the time of his death that the senior coroner for north west Wales had ordered a post mortem examination to be carried out into the death of Mr Joyce, of Sandown Close. Pathologist Dr Mark Atkinson, who conducted the examination, gave the provisional cause of death as head and chest trauma.

Having opened the inquest this morning Ms Riley adjourned the hearing pending the completion of further investigations. Emergency services had been called to the scene of the accident on Sunday[4].

The A494 road was closed in both directions for several hours. Police who were called to the scene on Sunday later appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the traffic on the road to come forward.[5]
