Driver and passengers scarper after early hours ‘smash ‘n’ run’

A driver and passengers of a car which crashed in Norton[1] fled from the scene leaving the vehicle abandoned on a roundabout.

Cleveland Police[2] were called to a single vehicle collision involving a black VW Passat near Billingham[3] Road, in Norton. It was reported that the driver and occupants left immediately.

The crash caused damage to barriers on a nearby roundabout and the car was abandoned in the road. The incident happened shortly before 12.10am in the early hours of Friday and enquiries are now ongoing.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Units attended and taped off the damage, arranged recovery of the vehicle from the roundabout and informed our colleagues at the local authority.

"Enquiries are on-going and police would appeal for anyone with information, doorbell, dashcam or cctv which could assist to get in touch. Please contact Cleveland Police on the 101 number quoting ref 164258.
