Dashcam footage shows A19 road rage danger driver ‘trying to get …

Shocking footage shows the moment a danger driver fuelled on road rage swerved at his elderly victim's car on the A19.

Shane Durose has been banned from the roads after he repeatedly swerved his vehicle at another car in a "payback" move after believing he had been cut up by the fellow driver. The 37-year-old narrowly avoided prison after he was sentenced for the shocking incident last week[1].

It was a 60-year-old heavy goods driver who captured the incident on his car's dashcam footage while on the A19 on January 13. He told Teesside Live: "It was horrific. It looked like he was trying to ram him in the side. He would have hit the barrier and it could have killed him if they'd crashed."

The dangerous driving occurred after the victim moved into the inside lane on the A19 after the Crathorne turn-off. The reporting driver, who asked to remain anonymous, said it appeared as though the Durose was in the victim's blind spot and he had to break sharply.

No collision occurred but Durose then chased down the victim, a man in his 80s, and swerved at him forcing him out of his lane. Teesside Crown Court[3] heard how the victim's SUV had to move over and almost left the road, nearly colliding with the bridge pillar.

The two vehicles came within inches of one another on the A19[4]. "In the view of the witness, the defendant was the aggressor and he was getting back at the second vehicle for the earlier inconvenience," added Jenny Haigh, prosecuting.

Durose, of Lindrick, Marton[5], confirmed he was the driver of the vehicle but says he didn't realise the extent of his dangerous driving until he was played the full footage ahead of his crown court appearance. He claims that he wasn't angry when the incident took place but was frustrated and trying to get the other driver's attention.

"It was absolutely shocking," said the concerned driver, who captured the incident on dashcam footage. "He had a very clear road rage problem. I think he's lucky that he didn't get jailed but at least he's now banned from the roads and received a suspended sentence."

Recorder David Brooke KC told Durose he had watched the footage five or six times as he was "very concerned" by what he saw. He said: "You claim you weren't angry but this is clearly an incident of road rage. You thought you had been cut up probably by someone who just didn't see you."

"This idea that you were trying to attract his attention I reject as ridiculous. You were trying to pay him back, you were very lucky that someone wasn't seriously hurt."

Durose has been banned from driving twice before for driving under the influence of excessive alcohol but these offences date back to 2006 and 2008.

The defendant was handed an eight month sentence suspended for two years. He must carry out 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days, 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £250 at a rate of £5 a week which will be deducted from his benefits.

Durose is also banned from getting behind the wheel for two years and must pass and extended driving test.
