Cyclist fighting for his life after crash with van on Staffordshire road

A cyclist is fighting for his life after being involved in a crash with a van on a Staffordshire road. A man in his 60s suffered injuries to his head and face following the 'serious collision'.

He was rushed to hospital where his condition is currently described as 'critical'. Police have confirmed that the van driver remained at the scene and is helping with inquiries.

Now officers are appealing for witnesses to the smash, which happened in Tamworth Road, Whittington, outside Whittington Barracks, near Lichfield at 1.20pm yesterday (August 15).

A Staffordshire Police[2] spokesman said: "We were called yesterday following reports of a collision involving a cyclist and a white van.

Paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service and an air ambulance attended with officers.

"The cyclist, a man in his 60s, sustained head and facial injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. He remains in a critical but stable condition.

"The driver of the van remained at the scene and assisted officers with inquiries. The road was closed just after 1.30pm and reopened just after 6pm.

"Officers from the Collision Investigation Unit are particularly keen to speak to witnesses or those who may have CCTV or dashcam footage of the area at the time."
