Boy, 6, dies after car and van collide in tragic head-on crash

A six-year-old boy has died after a tragic crash on a main road. The child was a passenger in a red Chrysler Crossfire car which was involved in a collision with a grey Volkswagen Caddy van on the A426 Rugby[1] Road in Cotesbach, close to the Leicestershire / Warwickshire[2] border yesterday afternoon (August 5).

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the youngster could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Chrysler driver sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where he remains in a stable condition, Leicestershire Police said. The van driver was not injured.

"The Chrysler had just come off the Gibbet roundabout and was heading along Rugby Road, towards Lutterworth, when the collision occurred with the Volkswagen, which was travelling in the opposite direction," a police spokesperson said. "Officers would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or captured it on video recording equipment in their vehicles.

"We know there were a number of people in the area at the time. We would particularly like to speak to the driver of a white 4x4 style vehicle and a woman who was also driving in the area.

"Both left the scene before officers arrived and they may be able to help with our investigation." The A426 was closed in both directions between the A5 / Gibbet roundabout and the Sir Frank Whittle roundabout south of Lutterworth while emergency services attended to the appalling incident.

It is known to be an accident blackspot. A man died in a collision on that section of road in December 2016. In addition, two people were seriously injured, spending several weeks in hospital, when a van and a lorry collided head-on in December 2020.

Anyone with information about the crash yesterday, which happened at about 12pm, is asked to contact PC 212 Suki Sahota on 101 or visit www.leics.police.uk, quoting crime number 23*484442.
