Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson ‘fuming’ after huge Paul Mullin injury …

Wrexham AFC overcame a youthful Manchester United XI 3-1 in their latest US pre-season game - but it came at a cost as star striker Paul Mullin suffered a punctured lung. Reds boss Phil Parkinson was furious with opposition goalkeeper Nathan Bishop who collided with Mullin on the edge of the box.

The young United stopper has since issued an apology to Mullin on social media, but it looks as though the Dragons forward will be out for several weeks. Speaking just after the final whistle Parkinson admitted he was "fuming" with the challenge.

He said: "Paul's got a small puncture in his lung, he's in hospital at the moment. It was a dangerous challenge and it's a massive blow for us because Paul is an outstanding player.

"I'm fuming with it, I've got to be honest with you. It was a clumsy and reckless challenge in a pre-season game so I'm not happy with it at all."

Parkinson was happy with his side's display during the 3-1 victory, with goals from Elliot Lee, Aaron Hayden and Sam Dalby securing the win. Parkinson said: "It was a big occasion for our lads tonight, I thought we grew into the game. We got the two goals in the first half which were great from our point of view.

"It was a fantastic cross from Macca (Liam McAlinden) and great from Elliot Lee. The set play goal, first contact and then Aaron (Hayden) at the back stick.

"It was disappointing to concede just before half time, a little bit of a lack of concentration, but second half I thought we controlled it for long periods and it was great for Dalbs (Sam Dalby) to get the third."

The Manchester United[3] goalkeeper did take to Twitter[4] to offer his apologies to Mullin. He said: "Just wanted to share my sincerest apologies to Paul Mullin.

"It was a complete misjudgement and a genuine accident with zero malicious intent. Wishing you the speediest recovery hope to see you back scoring goals as soon as possible."

Wrexham now face a Philadelphia Union XI at Subaru Park in the early hours of Saturday morning (kick-off 12.30am UK time). That game marks the final game of the US tour as the Dragons return home to prepare for the League Two season opener against MK Dons on August 5.
