Serious crash shuts A34 near Abingdon for several hours

A grey Volvo V90 and a blue Mazda parked in a layby were involved in the collision on the southbound carriageway between Marcham and Didcot[1] at around 11.35am.

Police closed the A34 between the Marcham and Milton Interchanges until just before 5.30pm last night, with both lanes only opening around 7pm.  

A woman in her 30s suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where she remains in a stable condition.

A man in his 50s was also injured and taken to hospital, where he remains.

Motorists described being stuck in stationary traffic with ‘engines off’ and cars ‘not going anywhere.’

Several emergency vehicles were also seen at the scene of the crash, including fire engines and paramedics.

One eyewitness added that the nearby village of Steventon was gridlocked.

Delays were also reported on routes through Abingdon[7] town centre. 

It came as festivalgoers headed to Truck Festival for the event this weekend.

Delays of up to an hour were reported on the A34 southbound throughout the afternoon.

The #A34[8] is CLOSED southbound between #A415[9] #Abingdon[10] and #A4130[11] near #Didcot[12] #Oxfordshire[13] following a collision.

Police told motorists heading southbound to leave the carriageway at the Botley Interchange and join the A420 instead until the junction with the A338.

They were then advised to take the A417 to Wantage[16], followed by the A4130 which took them back to the A34 Milton Interchange.
