Moment car crashes through pedestrian crossing after wall smash

This is the moment a car crashed into a wall and through a pedestrian crossing before rolling onto its side.

The footage, caught on CCTV, was shared widely on social media following the incident on Birkenhead Road in Meols, Wirral[1], at around 1.45am on Sunday, July 2. The footage shows the bright headlights of a car come into shot before the vehicle collides with a brick wall.

A huge cloud of smoke appears as the car continues at speed before crashing into a grey internet box and the traffic light of a pedestrian crossing. The car then rolls onto its side before bouncing off another brick wall.

The car then lies on its side displaying hazard lights as a second car stops a short distance away. There's lots of debris and smoke in the road following the impact.

The ECHO[3] went to the scene one day after the horror crash and spoke to The Rev Mark Bates from St Andrews Church, whose wall was damaged in the incident. Pictures from the scene show piles of bricks lying in the gardens of the church and a police cordon surrounding a damaged pelican crossing post.

The Rev Bates said: "This is what we encountered on Sunday morning at 1.40am when a car hit the wall, destroyed it and then continued down the footpath taking out the pelican crossing and one of our neighbour's walls as well. The car then ended up on its side.

"The extent of the damage is quite extensive and so we will wait and see what happens whether insurance or anything else is in place."

Merseyside Police confirmed a man Matthew Bratley, 21, of North Parade, Hoylake[4], has been charged on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle when above the alcohol level limit. He has been bailed to appear in court on August 1.
