Huge 20-mile diversion as A40 stretch closes overnight

Motorists will face an official diversion taking them into Oxfordshire and back again when a stretch of the A40 in the Cotswolds[1] is closed overnight this summer. The major road[2] near Northleach will be shut from Tuesday, July 25 until Tuesday, August 8 from 8pm to 7am.

The 20-mile diversion route that will be signposted by Gloucestershire County Council[3] will take motorists on the A429 through Bourton-on-the-Water and on the A424 to Wyck Rissington and to Burford on the A40. It is a diversion that is suitable for all vehicles and some drivers will know other routes

The road will not be closed on weekends. Drivers will need to proceed with caution outside of the work hours as there will be a temporary surface.

For safety reasons there will be no vehicle access through the work site with the exception of the emergency services. A 1.5-mile stretch of the A40 between the A429 roundabout and the junction for Windrush will be resurfaced.

The improvement work will see over 2,300 tonnes of binder and surface course laid on the A40. The resurfacing work is part of the council’s commitment to invest a further £100 million into county’s roads.

Cllr Dom Morris, cabinet member responsible for highways at Gloucestershire County Council, said: “As part of our further £100 million investment into highways, we are continuing to invest in our local roads to ensure we keep our county moving. This resurfacing project will help to improve the quality of an important route through the Cotswolds.

“I would like to thank residents and businesses for their patience while we undertake this work to improve the road.”
