Inquest opens into death of grandmother killed after being hit by lorry

An inquest has opened into the death of an "incredible and kind" grandmother who died after being hit by a lorry in a town centre crash. Angela Williams, 62, died after being struck by a lorry in Flint[1] on Monday, June 5.

At an inquest opening held at Ruthin[2] County Hall today, John Gittins, senior coroner for North Wales east and central heard that Mrs Williams, of Richard Heights in Flint, had crossed the road by a set of traffic lights on Church Street into the path of an HGV that had been waiting at the lights moments prior.

Emergency services were called to the street, which was cordoned off for almost four hours, but sadly Mrs Williams was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at 12.35pm. A post mortem was conducted by Home Office pathologist Dr Brian Rodgers who provided a provisional cause of death of a severe head injury. The inquest was adjourned to a future date yet to fixed.

The 37-year-old driver of the HGV was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving last week and has since been released under investigation. In an emotional tribute[4] issued via North Wales Police[5], Angela’s family said: “She was kind and empathetic to people from all walks of life. She was a great mum and grandmother to her two sons and her grandson.

“We all loved her very much. We will miss her enormously and have learned so much from her. She will stay in our hearts forever. She was an incredible person who overcame many obstacles in her life, whilst being a support to others. She was such a positive presence in our family.

“Angela was popular in her local community and spoke highly of her friends. We would like to thank them all for making her feel welcome in Flint[6]. The world just won’t be as fun without her. We are heartbroken and would like to be given privacy and time to grieve.”
