Huge M5 delays after 150 litres of diesel spilt with queues up to …

Motorists heading to the Westcountry from Gloucestershire have been caught in long delays after a lorry hit debris on the M5 in Somerset. A resultant diesel spill has seen lane closures which are likely to continue until tonight (Wednesday, June 28).

It happened on the southbound carriageway between junction 20 for Clevedon and 21 for Weston-super-Mare. At times, there have been eight miles of queues and delays of 90 minutes.

National Highways said a lorry suffered a rupture to its fuel tank and a spillage of 150 litres of diesel has resulting in a carriageway surface damage. A full resurfacing of the road will be required and will be carried out overnight tonight.

It said: "Lane 1 (of 3) remains closed due to resurfacing. Resurfacing of lanes 1 and 2 has been confirmed for tonight.

"The carriageway will be fully closed to facilitate the resurfacing operation. Please expect delays on the southbound M5 in the area for the remainder of this afternoon and in to the evening."

Traffic and travel serivce Inrix said:" Long delays, queueing traffic and one lane closed due to oil spillage on M5 Southbound from J20 B3133 Ettlingen Way (Clevedon) to J21 A370 (Weston-super-mare). Congestion to halfway past J19 (Portishead) and traffic diverting through Yatton and Congresbury.

"A lane closure is now in place until tonight as when the road will be resurfaced." Full live updates in our blog[2]
