Elderly couple’s Essex home completely destroyed by house fire

The home of an elderly couple living in Ongar has been completely destroyed by a fire. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service were called to The Spinney in Ongar shortly before 5pm on Thursday (June 15).

When crews arrived, they reported the elderly residents were already out of the property and the house was fully ablaze. Crews from Wickford, Ongar, Brentwood and Harlow all attended. Ambulance crews also attended the scene.

The fire service said that the fire had began after an accident involving highly flammable white spirit. Firefighters had to use breather apparatus as they fought the fire and the two occupants of the home were treated by paramedics at the scene.

A spokesperson for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire and extinguished it by 5:55pm.

"The fire started after an accident involving white spirit. The occupants were left in the care of the Ambulance Service."
