Arsonist destroys caravan near landmark North Wales site

An arsonist has destroyed a caravan near a landmark North Wales site. The attack took place near the Duke of Lancaster ship in Mostyn, Flintshire[1] yesterday.

It is understood the caravan was not in a holiday park. North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it was alerted to the incident at a site near the ship at 4.48pm on Saturday.

A NWFRS spokesman said it sent one crew from Holywell[2] to the scene. She added that the cause of the blaze was "believed to be deliberate ignition."

The caravan was completely destroyed by the fire. It is not thought anyone was hurt in the incident. NWFRS has passed the incident to North Wales Police[3].

The Duke of Lancaster had been a passenger ferry and a cruise liner[4] around Ireland, Scotland and Europe from 1956. In the late 1970s a Liverpool-based company wanted to reuse it as a dry-docked attraction.

In 1979 the ship was then beached at Llanerch-y-Mor in Flintshire with plans to turn it into a floating leisure and retail park called The Fun Ship. It ran into problems in the 1980s and has been a local landmark every since.
