Update on time A417 will reopen after woman killed in crash

A major stretch of the A417 in Gloucestershire could remain closed until 8pm today (Thursday, May 11) after a fatal crash[1] claimed the life of a woman in her 40s from the Cotswolds. The collision near the Birdlip junction at 9pm last night (Wednesday) also seriously injured a woman in her 30s from Newent.

The road was shut from the Air Balloon roundabout to the Cowley roundabout overnight and remains shut while police investigations continue at the scene. Earlier today, police had to remind motorists not to drive through the road closures[2] after multiple motorists were seen doing so.

The road was due to have been opened before the evening rush-hour. But National Highways has said the closures are likely to be in place into the evening with the latest estimate of 8pm and diversions are in place[3].

The collision involved a blue Mazda-2 which was travelling towards Swindon and a white Nissan Qashqai which was travelling towards the Air Balloon roundabout. A woman in her 40s from Cirencester was pronounced dead at the scene and her next of kin has been informed.

Another woman, aged in her 30s and from Newent, was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol for treatment to serious injuries where she remains at this time. Officers from the Roads Policing Unit would like to hear from anyone who has not already spoken to police and has information they feel may be relevant and would like to hear from anyone who has dashcam footage they feel may be relevant.
