Freeport police arrest two men, recover stolen items and weapon

FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) - Freeport police arrest two men involved in a retail theft Thursday, recovering stolen items and a loaded gun.
Anthony Evans, 44, of Freeport faces felony charges of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and obstructing justice. Jack Cartwright, 33, of Freeport faces a felony charge of retail theft with a prior conviction.
On Feb. 22, officers responded to a call from a retail store that identified Cartwright, the registration and a description of the car he left in after stealing items. Officers found the vehicle with two occupants in the 1000 block of S. Oak Avenue.
After Evans and Cartwright were detained, officers recovered the reported stolen items and a bottle of alcohol inside the vehicle. A loaded .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol was also recovered in the area last occupied by Evans.
Evans was transported to the Stephenson County Jail where he is being held pending the outcome of a detention hearing. Cartwright was processed and released under the provisions set forth in the Pre-Trial Fairness Act.
