Toyota Reimagines the Land Cruiser as a Sharp-Edged Electric …

Toyota has offered up a glimpse at the Land Cruiser[1]’s future.

The automaker is bringing an electric concept based on the legendary 4×4 to this year’s Japan Mobility Show. It’s unclear if the Land Cruiser Se is a preview of a production model, but it suggests that the model is at the forefront of the automaker’s thinking as it finally begins to embrace electrification.

The most surprising thing about the prototype isn’t that it’s battery-powered: It’s that it looks so different from the 250-series Land Cruiser[2] that debuted this past August. The concept has the same general profile we’ve come to expect from the off-roader but lacks the new version’s retro-inspired boxiness. It still has plenty of sharp edges, though, especially along its completely revised front end and sculpted side panels. Some purists may grumble, but there’s no denying it’s an attractive and thoroughly modern reimagining of the SUV.

A particularly interesting aspect of the design is that it’s larger than that of the current ICE Land Cruiser. The concept is 202.8 inches long and has a wheelbase of 120.1 inches, making it about 8 inches longer than the 250-series on both measures (the latter is five inches taller at 73.2 inches tall, though). The extra room means that the Land Cruiser Se has room for an extra row of seats, pushing the seating capacity to eight. No images of the interior were made available, but Toyota says the space will be comfortable and quiet.

The automaker also didn’t release any real about the vehicle’s power train, other than to say it will deliver “high-torque driving performance.” It will likely include multiple motors, with at least one positioned on each axle to deliver the all-wheel drive that people expect from the nameplate. The announcement stresses that the EV will be adept at “tackling rough terrain.”

It’s unclear if Toyota has plans to build the Land Cruiser Se or if it is just a concept vehicle. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see it eventually go on sale, though. Earlier this year, the automaker announced plans to launch 10 EVs between now and 2026[3], and it’s easy to imagine this SUV garnering serious interest
