The UK will bask in the sunshine as the mercury spikes over Saturday and Sunday May 20 and May 21. Highs of 21C can be expected across swathes of the country.

"Across England and Wales, lots of sunshine is on the way," said BBC[1] meteorologist Chris Fawkes. "It is going to feel warm in the sunshine with temperatures between 18C and 21C." Fawkes said it might be worth "slapping on some sun cream".

In its forecast, the BBC says: "Today, extensive cloud and some patches of rain will persist over Scotland and Northern Ireland. England and Wales will have a largely sunny day with some patchy cloud developing in the afternoon." And looking ahead to Saturday night, it adds: "A cloudy and wet night for Scotland and Northern Ireland as further persistent spells of rain continue to spread south-eastwards.

"A largely dry and clear night for much of England and Wales." The Met Office has forecast highs of 18C in Birmingham on Saturday as sunshine wins out.

"Staying dry into the evening with plenty of late sunshine. Turning chilly overnight as temperatures fall underneath the clear skies, with some patches of mist developing by dawn," the forecasting agency predicted for Saturday night. And looking ahead to Sunday, it continued: "A fine day with plenty of sunny spells, especially during the morning ahead of fair-weather cloud building during the afternoon.

"Feeling warm in the sunshine with light winds." An outlook for Monday onwards, lasting to Wednesday, reads: "Plenty of settled weather with variable amounts of cloud and sunny spells. Feeling warm in the sunshine, especially on Monday. Winds staying light."
