‘Suspicious item’ recovered from canal as police shut towpath and …

A 'suspicious item' was found in a Birmingham canal which prompted a police probe. Officers closed Winson Green Road[1] today, Monday, May 22.

Officers also shut the the canal footpath after they were alerted to a suspicious item, which had been recovered from the canal. The exact item - which is being examined - has not yet been confirmed.

The canal towpath, near to Rabone Road and Monument Road in the Birmingham area, has also been closed to pedestrians. Police inquiries are ongoing.

A police spokeswoman told BirminghamLive: "We've closed the road on Winson Green Road near to the canal footpath after we were alerted to a suspicious item that has been recovered from the canal at around 11.30am today.

"A cordon has been put in place while the device is examined. The canal towpath near to Rabone Road and Monument Road in the Birmingham area has also been closed to pedestrians."

One eye-witness told BirminghamLive: "There’s a massive police presence on Winson Green Road. Not sure what’s happened but loads of police and it looks as if something has been found in the canal."

NX West Midlands posted on Twitter: "Due to an incident on Winson Green Road #WinsonGreen Service 11A/C are diverting in both directions via: Spring Hill, Icknield Street, Heaton Street, Soho Hill, Soho Road Apologies for any disruption to your journey."
