Huge lorry fire on M60 and crash on M602 causes traffic chaos

Drivers faced long delays on Greater Manchester's motorways this evening (May 12) after a lorry caught fire on the M60 and a collision on the M602.

There was congestion building on the M60 anti-clockwise between J16 for Swinton and J15 for Bolton. Two lanes were closed off due to an ongoing lorry fire with crews at the scene.

A GMFRS spokesman said: "At 17.22 this afternoon we received the first of multiple 999 calls reporting an HGV on fire on the hard shoulder of the M60 between junctions 17 and 16.

"Police and firefighters are at the scene working closely together to bring the situation under control. The motoroway is closed and the area should be avoided."

It is not known whether anyone was injured. GMP have been approached for more information.

There were also 30 minute delays on the M602 between J2 for Eccles and J1 for the M60 and M62 with two out of three lanes blocked off due to a crash. The motorway reopened at around 6pm.
