Man killed in crash which shut A55 for nine hours

A man was killed in the crash that shut the A55[1] for nine hours this morning.[2] Police, ambulance and fire crews were called following the collision shortly before 3.30am,

The A55[3] was closed in both directions near the Britannia Bridge. The road remained closed until around 12.30pm this afternoon, causing traffic chaos in the area.

North Wales Police[4] have now confirmed a man died in the crash. They said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man’s next of kin and the coroner have been informed. Police thanked the public for their patience during the road closure and offered condolences to the family of the man.

Chief Inspector Jason Davies said: “We can confirm that the A55 was closed this morning due to a fatal road collision. Our deepest condolences remain with the man’s family at this difficult time.

“We are grateful for the understanding of the public who may have been delayed by the traffic this morning. This incident is now being investigated and I am appealing to anyone who may have been travelling along the A55 Eastbound near to Britannia Bridge prior to the collision and who may have seen or have dashcam footage of a grey BMW 3 Series, to contact us.”

Any witnesses or anyone with information is urged to contact us via our website or by calling 10, quoting reference number 23000438583. A Welsh Ambulance Service[6] spokesperson said they had an ambulance, duty manager and rapid response vehicle (RRV) at the scene, while North Wales Fire and Rescue Service[7] sent two engines from Bangor[8] and Menai Bridge.
