Emergency services called to crossing over man’s welfare concerns

Emergency services were called to an incident on the Sheppey Crossing this morning (May 3). The crossing was forced to close after police were called to reports of concerns for the welfare of a man. Officers from Kent Police[1] were called to the bridge on the A249, which joins the Isle of Sheppey[2] with mainland Kent[3], shortly after 9am.

Pictures from the scene on social media showed a large emergency service response to the incident, with crews from the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) and Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) in attendance. It has been confirmed that two fire engines were also there, as well as the KFRS water safety unit. The key road was shut in both directions while the incident was being dealt with.

Police have since confirmed that the road has been re-opened, although some emergency services personnel remain at the scene. A police spokesperson said: "Just after 9am on Wednesday, May 3, Kent Police was called to a report of concern for the welfare of a man on the A249. Emergency service personnel attended and the road has since been re-opened."

A spokesperson for KFRS added: "Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called at 9.15am today to assist SECAmb near to the Sheppey Way, in Iwade, Sittingbourne. Two fire engines were sent to the scene, as well as the water safety unit." KFRS added that their involvement at the incident ended at 10.55am.

SECAmb has been approached for further details.
