Clacton Pier to have large emergency service presence for ‘exercise …

Emergency services are carrying out a large-scale 'planned exercise' at Clacton Pier today (May 20). Colleagues from across the 999 services - including Essex Police and Essex County Fire and Rescue Service - are present at the seaside attraction.

This is not the first time that Clacton Pier has been used by the emergency services to prepare for incidents. In September 2023, the services descended on Clacton Pier to carry out a "mock emergency" where they rehearsed procedures[1] for if a casualty fell into the water under the pier.

A spokesperson for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: "We're taking part in a planned exercise at Clacton Pier this morning (May 20) with our partners. Don't be alarmed if you see lots of emergency services colleagues in the area."

Essex Police has been approached to confirm their involvement. Further information has been requested from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. East of England Ambulance Service has also been contacted.

Last year a young man died after getting lost at sea near Clacton Pier. Sujal Sahu, 21, had been one of several people swimming as a group in the sea near the pier during the extreme heatwave in Essex that week. A major operation was launched after the group got into difficulty in the water[3].

Five people - four males and a female - were rescued from the water and taken to Colchester General Hospital for further assessment and care. They were later discharged, but Mr Sahu remained missing at sea. Over the coming days, the coastguard and police searched the shoreline and the waters to the north and south of the pier to no avail.
