In video taken a short time after the crash, a HGV tipper truck can be seen on its side with gravel covering a stretch of the road. A badly damaged crash barrier can also be seen.
Firefighters were seen surrounding the lorry this morning. Two cars can be seen on the grassy bank and also appear to be damaged.
National Highways, which manages the road, said an assessment of the barrier was due to take place. It is not clear when the road will be opened.
Motorists have described being stuck in long traffic jams of over an hour. Some could be seen leaving their cars and chatting on the carriageway.
Heavy traffic has also been reported on diversion routes around South Cave and North Cave. The tipper truck is believed to belong to Ashcourt, a leading supplier of building materials.
