New independent weekly market could be coming to Somerset town

A weekly market could be set up in Weston-super-Mare[1] - in a bid to boost footfall to the town centre. Weston Town Council is to explore the possibility of setting up a new venture, potentially in the Italian Gardens. The market would initially run for a trial period of 12 months.

The idea for a new market in the town[2] was proposed by local councillor Robert Payne. Councillor Payne said: "One of the things residents and visitors regularly call for to improve the town centre and generate a buzz is a good and regular market. They are popular and successful in other towns, and I think there's a good chance of it working here.

"They also support local producers and traders. The market would run for an initial 12-month trial period on the Italian Gardens to assess viability." There used to be an indoor market in Dolphin Square but this closed after the complex was demolished in 2013. Weston[4] Town Council will now look at the feasibility of a weekly market.

A Weston[5] Town Council spokesman said: "We are exploring and looking at the feasibility of a weekly market. We are in discussions with partners such as the BID and North Somerset Council. "A suggestion of it being sited on the gardens by the High Street and moved into the town square, once established, has been made."

Weston already has a successful eat:Festival[6].

The next eat:Festival is this Saturday (April 29) from 10am to 4pm at the Italian Gardens.
