London Waterloo station to become ‘lighter and brighter’ through …

A two-year restoration project has begun at London Waterloo station, with the ambition to renovate the infrastructure's 100-year-old glazed roof. This scheme will see the glass panels and roof support structures replaced with a plastic replacement, transforming the structure following a rebuild from just after the First World War in 1922. Around 10,000 of these new plastic glazed panels will be installed across the 12,000 sq m of roof, an area which sits around twice the size of the Wembley Stadium pitch.

The new panelling is a polycarbonate glazing material that comes in at around 50% lighter in overall weight than glass, which will improve the strength of the roof whilst also reducing the overall stress on the structure. Cem Davis, Network Rail's London Waterloo station manager, said: "Customers will soon benefit from a lighter and brighter station, making journeys more welcoming and pleasant.

"Work is also under way to improve the retail and food and drink offer, and the toilets are also in the middle of a large-scale refurbishment. "There will be some changes to the station as we carry out the upgrades and our station team will be on hand to ensure customers' station experience is as seamless as possible." To minimise disruptions and ensure traffic safety throughout the period of works, a one-way system will be introduced on Cab Road for taxis.

Passengers should also expect scaffolding to be ever present. This project comes as part of a broader improvement programme at the station, seeing one of the busiest across the UK rail network welcome further enhancements such as new retail brands and food outlets, accompanied by the delivery of a more sustainable wooden seating area. These works will add to previous refurbishing touches to the toilets from earlier this year, seeing a gender-neutral facility added, according to Network Rail.
