Accrington bus stop finally repaired six months after car crash into it

A councillor says residents are pleased that a damaged bus stop has finally been replaced after a six-month wait. Councillor for Netherton, Noordad Aziz, says there was a road traffic collision in which a vehicle collided with Woodlands bus stop in Clayton-le-Moors[1] last September, and he has been contacting Lancashire[2] County Council ever since to replace the bus stop. Cllr Aziz said: "Although I am glad it has been fixed now and residents are happy that the bus stop is safe for them to use again, it has taken longer than it should have.

I reported it and, at first, they had to get the clearance from the insurance, and then there were system issues. "The damage of the metal structure of the bus stop and the shattered glass made it look like an eyesore and put some residents off from using the bus. Residents had to walk 100 metres up to the next bus stop which was hard for some of them during bad weather[3] in the winter."

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council[4] said: "We're sorry for the length of time it has taken to repair this bus shelter following the incident towards the end of last year. We always attempt to recover the cost of repair or replacement of bus shelters via insurance in the first instance, before repairs are carried out as it can often be more difficult to recuperate damages once the shelter has already been repaired. "We are still pursuing a claim for the damage to this shelter, however, we have now repaired it as we don't want people to be inconvenienced any longer as they wait for their bus.

Access to bus stops and services is important for local residents and over the past three years we have invested GBP3.5m into new shelters across parts of Lancashire.

"We are continuing to invest in our bus shelter stock over the coming years to maintain them to the highest possible standard."
