Both sides of Garden of the Gods Road were closed down to one lane at the time. The Hazmat situation was reported just after 11 a.m. According to officials, two oil drums were left in the street.

When street crews were working to remove the barrels, one ruptured and spilled. According to CSFD, the oil did get into a nearby storm drain and into Monument Creek. As of 1:40 p.m., the process to mitigate the oil was still underway.

A spokesperson with Colorado Springs Utilities explained this sill will not have an impact on drinking water. "I can assure our customers your drinking water is safe," Steve Berry with Colorado Springs Utilities explained. Colorado Parks and Wildlife was also at the scene looking into the possibility of fish or animals being impacted.

CPW was concerned the spill could impact fish, birds and any wildlife drinking from the creek.
