Huge sweet warehouse in Bradford is celebrating 60th with special event

A Bradford sweet warehouse is marking its 60th birthday with a special event for customers. Hancocks on the Euroway Industrial Estate, Bradford supplies sweets to independent retailers, online confectionery businesses, and leisure outlets across the city. The depot has been in the city for 41 years supplying confectionery and this year is playing a part in the 60th anniversary of Hancocks.

The company was set up in the Midlands in 1962 by Ray Hancocks and his wife Elizabeth who sold sweets wholesale from their small sweet shop. Now it has 14 depots across the UK, an e-commerce site and the option for customers to click and collect. Read more: Spectacular immersive Van Gogh Alive exhibition to launch in Bradford

Customers include local independent retailers, online businesses including sweet shops and bakers and leisure outlets from around West Yorkshire. The Bradford store is run by Linda Haley. It opened its doors in 1981 and since then has seen a huge growth in trade.

It's marking the milestone on Thursday September 22, with a 'birthday bonanza' event for cash and carry customers. It has a huge mix of customers including popular soap Emmerdale. Its Bonds Shaker Cups are on display in the farm shop in the hit ITV show.

It also has the Oldest Sweet Shop in the World, based on Pateley Bridge, as one of its customers. In the last 12 months Bradford has sold the equivalent weight of a double decker bus in Kingsway giant strawberries and enough 99 flakes to make 372,926 ice creams. That's double the population of Bradford!

The store has also sold so many brain lickers that if you stacked them on top of each other it would be higher than mount Everest. Hancocks Bradford manager Linda Haley said: "We're looking forward to marking the 60th anniversary of Hancocks and look forward to welcoming our customers and suppliers into the store. "For any business to reach such an anniversary is a real milestone, even more so after the last two years and the changes we've all had to make to adapt to the challenges of the pandemic.

"We've seen our customer base evolve during that period. There's been an influx of different businesses adding on confectionery for online sales and delivery options. "More recently, our customers have told us that they're looking for value for money and are passing that saving on to their customers.

Our unrivalled range means we're able to offer great value and top quality products." Linda added: "For our customers at the Bradford store, we'll have loads of great deals during our celebrations with huge savings as well to say thanks for their continued support. They'll also have the chance to meet the brands and win some amazing prizes."

Customer Michael Keeley from Chocky Mike has shopped at the Bradford branch for 27 years. He said: "I popped into the depot on the off chance one day and I can honestly say that visit changed my business for the better. Not only that it's been a pleasure to have made friends at the branch which adds to the shopping experience.

I've always found the staff and management very friendly, helpful and always willing to go that extra mile."
